The Russian Federation’s military intervention in Ukraine

The USA and NATO war against the Russian Federation

Many are the writings and speeches about the nature, the causes and origins of the conflict started on February 24th between the Russian Federation (RF) and Ukraine. Some of them are credible and rich in useful information, but their depth (how comprehensive they are) depends on the degree to which they frame the conflict within the actual historical process it is part of, and therefore on the comprehension that the author has of such process. As for accuracy - unless it is merely academic speech or writing -  it is up to the author and to the reader to verify it.

The Russian military intervention in Ukraine is the response to the attack moved by the USA - by far the greatest imperialist power since 75 years. The USA has been moving an attack against the RF, both directly and through the 30 countries belonging to NATO-OTAN, since Putin put an end to their freedom of intervention in the territory of the RF and in most of the former soviet countries. The USA attack against the RF is part of the struggle that the imperialist groups is unfolding in order to gain free access to the territories of the RF and the other countries originated, around 1989-1991, from the dissolution of the USSR - the first socialist country of which we celebrate the centenary on December 30th 1922.

The Soviet State, founded in 1917 under the guidance of the Communist Party of Lenin and later of Stalin, successfully resisted three consecutive aggressions from the imperialist powers: first a military one (1918-1921); then, in the second attempt, done by sanctions, boycotts, plots and murdering of soviet officials; and lastly militarily again (1941-1945), an attack spearheaded by Hitler’s Third Reich.

The fourth attempt, called “Cold War”, started by Churchill in 1946 and helmed by the USA, ended in the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. However, the thesis that the dissolution of the USSR was caused by the aggression, the strength of the USA and NATO-OTAN, and the activity of imperialist groups and powers of the world misrepresents the real course of events in favor of the bourgeoisie. It recurs in all the analyses by authors lacking the communist conception of the world, who don’t use dialectical materialism to analyze the course of events, who are under the influence of the bourgeoisie, including those who profess themselves as communists. The dissolution was the result of an earlier long period of weakening of the revolutionary impetus and the related economic, social and political decadence, triggered in the soviet society by the turn caused by the advent in 1956 of modern revisionists at the head of the CPSU, namely Khrushchev and later Brezhnev (1).

1. In this issue of La Voce a more extensive presentation of the victorious resistance of the USSR to the aggression of the imperialist groups and powers and of the “splitting of the one in two” of the USSR itself can be found in the article The unity of communists: the struggle for a righteous heading by Rosa L. on page 50.

The USA government pledged to the USSR government (Gorbachëv) not to expand NATO-OTAN eastwardly beyond the 1989 borders, but in reality, thanks to the dissolution of the USSR, imperialist groups in the USA and Europe had a free hand in the countries created after the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR. It was a terrible era for the Russian popular masses and those of other Soviet nations. The economy underwent privatization and was taken over by a handful of capitalists composed of: 1) top executives (apparatchiks) of the economic and political apparatus which in the previous decades had embraced the capitalist ways that was taking hold step by step in the USSR (2); 2) the leading figures of the criminal and shadow economy (the “black market”) that developed at the time on the sidelines and in the interstices of the formal economy (corruption was an issue obsessively and pointlessly raised by many Soviet officials of the Brezhnev era); and 3) the descendants of aristocratic and bourgeois families who took refuge abroad following the fall of the Tsarist empire. They are the ones that the manipulating and intoxicating system of the public opinion in imperialist countries calls “oligarchs”, the ones who are politically represented by Putin’s group. The conditions of popular masses dramatically deteriorated on all fronts, as indicated by sharp decline of average life expectancy, increase in general mortality (the victims of the dissolution of the USSR are estimated to a few tens of millions, some say fifty million, or more than double the Soviet victims cause by the Second World War), and by increased child mortality. The ousting of Yeltsin and the rise to power of Putin in 1999 in the RF marked the end of this phase of privatization and savage pillaging of the Russian economic and social system. From then on, a more stable economic, social and political regime was established, with somewhat equitable relations with the countries and groups of the imperialist world system. The RF inherited most of the territory, of the population, and of the natural resources, but also of the military might and the economic, technological and scientific apparatus from Brezhnev’s USSR. Under the political faction lead by Putin, the RF became a country exercising a national and international policy relatively independent from the USA and the International Community (IC) of USA, Zionist and European imperialist groups. Also, RF stepped in with relative autonomy: 1) in the resistance carried out by several countries (such as Iran, Syria, Palestine and a growing number of south American and African countries) unwilling to be impudently sacked by the imperialist groups of the IC; and 2) in the ongoing conflict between the USA and the Popular Republic of China (PRC), a country which itself is in the middle of the second of the three phases of the first socialist countries (3) in a time when the struggle between the two classes, the two ways and the two lines, by force of circumstance will take a turn to determine the future of the PRC and its role in history.

2. The thesis that soviet society turned suddenly into a capitalist society due to the resolutions of the XX Congress of the PCUS is wrong. Mao’s and other maoists’ error and its practical consequences in the struggle against modern revisionism are explained in the article “The restoration of the capitalist mode of production in the Soviet Union” in Rapporti Sociali n.8 (November 1990).

3. For a detailed analysis on this issue, check “Programmatic Manifest of the (new) Italian Communist Party”, chapter 1.7.3.

Regarding the USA and NATO-OTAN attack against the RF and the other former soviet countries, it is the expression of the more general attempt by the complex of USA imperialist groups to halt the decline of their global supremacy achieved in 1945 and which peaked in the Seventies (when the dollar became the international reserve currency). To arrest their decline, the “military-industrial-financial complex” - the real federal government of the USA - ruthlessly leverages: 1) their overwhelming military might deployed all over the world in hundreds of bases and agencies; 2) their experienced and tested instruments for infiltration, sabotage, exploitation of social contrasts of all nature, political destabilization and “regime change” - not always with favorable results, as seen in Afghanistan and Libya; and 3) the dollar’s monetary system, imposed from 1971 on as international reserve currency, in open violation of the international agreements of Bretton Woods of 1944 (the monetary and financial sanctions multiply, but they evermore backfire against the imperialist groups of the USA: they reduce the role of the dollar in the global monetary system). The violation of international agreements and treaties has become common practice for USA authorities, well before Donald Trump.

Pacifist propaganda, the education to non-violence is an absolutely right thing when directed against the warmongering politics of bourgeois countries, when directed to the people whom the bourgeoisie aims at drafting.

It is instead unfair if aimed at disarming and depriving the oppressed classes and peoples of their fighting spirit, in a situation where the bourgeoisie can recruit as many mercenaries and professionals as they want, thanks to their money, to the political and military turmoil in bourgeois societies, thanks to the rising labor productivity and the following exclusion of millions of individuals from the productive process.

We don’t need to condition ourselves to non-violence. We need to learn how to fight. Fight not in the name of a death sentence, be it the officer with his service pistol, the firing squad or the ideological and hierarchical subjection to the dominant class. We need to learn how to fight for a just cause.

This is the essence of our pacifism: fighting and fighting again only for a just cause. Because only from this struggle that a community of people can arise from the submission of the impotent masses to their dominators and the resigned participation to the military ventures they instigate; A community who need not fight to snatch from others their livelihood and therefore won’t need wars anymore.

***

The course of events imposed on the world by the dominion of the bourgeoisie compels the RF to a turn. The RF endured the sprawling of NATO-OTAN up to its borders. In 2014 RF took the hit and suffered the installation of an anti-Russian government in Ukraine, abandoning Yanukovych’s supporters to their own devices. It was only on February 24th 2022 that RF launched a military intervention against the continuation of such ongoing process. But the war that the capitalist of the RF - fat cats of the dissolution of the USSR, politically represented by Putin’s clique - launched on February 24th will play a role in the class struggle in Russia as well: in ways we cannot foresee at present, it will aid in either: 1) the complete integration (subservience) of Russian “oligarchs” in the IC of USA, Zionist and European imperialist groups (a worse subservience than the one occurred decades ago with the imperialist groups of Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia and other countries); (4) or 2) the comeback of socialism in the former soviet territories. Communist parties and associations are rife there, as in the former popular democracies of eastern Europe. They are divided among themselves and relatively weak, chiefly because they still lack a sufficiently advanced comprehension of the errors and limits which brought the USSR to decadence and dissolution. They also lack a specific elaboration and assimilation of the communist conception of the world: an easily negotiable stall. The war pushes them to surmount it.

4. The clashes with the USA imperialist groups in Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya and other theatres are but petty squabbles in the process of the constitution of the RF with Putin’s clique at the helm as an independent country, analogous in substance but different in form to the process of European imperialist groups towards the creation of a European political institution independent from the USA. But now the USA imperialist groups are in worse conditions, the general crisis worsened and they only welcome minions in the IC.

Instead, the imperialist groups of the USA, Russia and in the rest of world are separated by irreconcilable contrasts. Therefore, the clashes among them will increase in every field - ultimately each and every imperialist group must enhance their capital and to this end must assert the dominance of the country that favors their interests in the world. Moreover, the lingering of their dominance over the world would bring all humanity to a common undoing, thus it inspires a spontaneous and increasingly wide resistance among the popular masses and in the oppressed countries.

In every country, unrest and restiveness grow among the popular masses towards the course of things imposed by the imperialist bourgeoisie, even in the USA (as Trump showed) and in the other imperialist countries: we can clearly see this in Italy. But the popular masses, for their history and the conditions in which they were morally and intellectually formed by the dominant class, can only make history under the correct guidance. In the preset society, guidance can only come from: 1) groups of the dominant class, leveraging the restiveness of masses and develop the contrasts pitting their parts against each other - Donald Trump showed us how strong the contrasts are in the popular masses of the USA and how they can be used to mobilize them; or 2) the communists, mobilizing and organizing the popular masses, leveraging the common contrast the exists between all the fractions of the popular masses and the dominant class. Dialectical materialism is the method of leadership of the communists. Their lead is effective if they use it in their action. To this end they must use it as a method of knowledge, because freedom of action (that is, ability of action) is conscience of the necessity inherent to what one wants to transform. If you feed a chick she will lay eggs one day. You will fruitlessly feed a child to push her to lay eggs.

Building socialism is possible: that’s what the science of bourgeois society tells us as it was explained by Marx in The Capital. In each and every country, it’s up to the communists to understand how. We Italian communists need to understand the conditions of class struggle in our country and to advance the Revolution that will make a socialist Italy. Fulfilling this accomplishment is also the main way to help the communists from other countries and contribute to the development of proletarian internationalism.
